Researchers are trying to stop stony coral tissue loss disease.

News: There is a deadly coral disease called stony coral tissue loss disease in the Miami Caribbean sea. William Precht, a coral disease specialist in Florida is studying the disease. The disease was discovered in the fall of 2014. One possibility is that the disease is being carried in commercial ships’ ballast water to stabilize ships.

Another possibility is that virus is causing the disease in the corals. Some researchers suspect a bacterium to be the cause due to the corals response to antibiotic treatment. It is also possible there is more than one culprit that causes the disease. The ocean is a bath of bacteria and viruses. Not much is known about coral diseases in general. The cause of the coral disease is still unknown but researchers are doing everything to find a cure for the infected corals. Let’s support the efforts to heal the corals. ”Everything I have seen in the past pales in comparison to this,” says Brandt.
